CIE's continued retreat from rural Ireland?

The accompanying photographs of recent 'improvements' at Tralee station beggar belief- I really don't know what to say except perhaps why stop there? Why not make Mallow the railhead for Tralee or, better still, Heuston?
Apologies for not crediting 219RiverTolka who originally posted the above photos on the Irish Railway News website.

  1. You're overreacting. A short length of track and a run-around loop were removed- the runaround loop is not needed as, thank god, locomotive-hauled trains don't operate anymore.

  2. Also it would be nice if you credited the original creator of these images, over at IRN.

  3. Karl - apologies for using pics without crediting them to you. I was so annoyed by what I saw I just wanted to get them up here ASAP. In response to your other points, I think the travelling public and IE will rue the day that loco haulage was abandoned; and I can see no reason, other that possible safety concerns (the access road) that the buffer stops needed to be moved to their new location. It just means one more retrograde step for passengers in removing the railway from the station and if IE had their way passengers in Tralee would be left with a few benches under the exposed canopy and an ATVM - no staff, no ticket office - NO NOTHING! Scorched Earth style like the South Wexford line - you may not have noticed that the removal/demolition/sale of railway infrastructure is CIE/IE's specialist subject!

  4. The BIGGER problem is the 45 minute wait at Mallow for passengers who travel between Tralee and Cork on trains other than the early and late direct ones.
    Who thought that diagram up???

  5. I was not the creator of those images, I just recognised them from the IRN board.

  6. Even if the runaround loop is not needed, what good is done by taking it up. How do they know it will never be needed in future?
